Judge Wm. Cummings, of Kentland, Newton county’s deservedly popular candidate for cirouit judge, was in town yesterday and today. Mrs. Ed Randle, of the Ridge, returned today from four weeks’ treatment in a hospital, at Chicago. Her health is somewhat improved. The Halligan-Tanner oelebrated cattle case, is now up for trial again, at Montioello. Many witnesses and others went over today, to attend it. The box social at Blue Graas school house was a oomplete success. A prize for the most popular young lady was won by Miss Virgie Crone- Net proceeds were $31,15. The Halleck telephone exchange was today moved into J. F. Bruner’s residence* on Division street, which will be a very convenient location for the operator, Miss Ora Bruner. Mrs. Mattie Grant returned from Rose Lawn, last night and her niece, Miss Hattie Grant went up to take her place by the bedside of Miss Israel; who is still seriously sick, but at last accounts somewhat improved. The esstate consists of a, good farm and quite an amount of personal property.
Work is now in progress on the big implement store J. H. Chapman is ereoting at the corner of Van Rensselaer and Cornelia streets. It is intended to rush it through to completion in a few weeks. The Renicker Bros, will occupy it when completed. Representative Crumpacker has secured seventy signatures to hi petition for a republican cauous on the proposition to reduce the representation of Southern States that disfranchised the negro. Baker and Huff reached the scene of their futnre usefulness at Michigan City, Wednesday, in good condition and with no exoiting incidents. When the sheriff and son left, they were just being fitted out in new suits of olothes, of the latest fashion (there) and Baker at least was oheerfnl as ever, and aoted like he was no stranger to that kind of residence. Hnff didn’t appear qnite so oheerful. Baker will be given a ohanoe at some kind of clerk work, but Hnff will have a ohanoe to use his muscles. Our foot ball heroes, who were already “just too sweet for anything” have received an extra and very liberal sweetening at the hands of Mrs. John Jones, who gave to each and every one of the whole 18 members a pound of her oqlebrated home made oandy. An article, by the way, that is as deservedly popular in its way, as her father-in-law, Unole Bill N's famous roof paint, and tastes a whole lot better. But, really now, it is like gilding fine gold and painting the lily to put any more sweetness into those lads. Ain’t it girls?
