A Mugwump’s Mild Chiding.

Indianapolis News: Is not Congressman Crumpaoker in just a little bit of a hurry with his bill to make Porto Rico a part of the United States? If the island were still being discriminated against there would be justioe in the measure, but as she is now virtually enjoying free trade with this country there is little to be gained by it. His bill might serve as a bad precedent for the Philippines and perhaps other possessions whioh we are hardly ready to acoept in a more intimate relationship than that of “nppurtenant territory.” This evident haste to assimilate outside territory may lead to grave consequences and might inspire men with commercial interests in the possessions to demand immediate statehood. Measures like that proposed by Congressman Crumpacker might delay for a season.
