Fighting Horsemen oF Venezuela.
Venezuela possesses splendid fighting material in the horsemen of the “llanos,” or pastoral region. The “llanos” are not unlike the “veldt” of South Africa and their inhabitants have many points of resemblance to the Boers. It was the men of the “llanos,” under their dashing leader, Gen. Paez, who formed the backbone of the colonial army in the war of independence. They behaved with conspicuous gallantry in the decisive battle of Carabobo, which practically gave Venezuela its independence, but the fortunes of that day were turned by the British legion, who were hailed by Gen. Bollver as “the saviors of his country.”
