Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 34, Number 26, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 29 November 1901 — Bruce the Boss Deer Slayer. [ARTICLE]

Bruce the Boss Deer Slayer.

County Recorder R. B. Porter and wife arrived Monday afternoon from their two weeks’ stay at Crystal Falls in the Northern Peninsula. Regarding the three big deer, the slaying of which was briefly mentioned in a previous issue, the facts are that Brnce bagged three big bucks. Two in one day and one in another day. All were fine big horned fellows, and one especially was a whopper. All were shot with a Marlin 10 shot repeating rifle. The first one, Bruce must have had an attack of “buck ager,” as he shot at it five times before he hit it. It was 200 yards away, and seemed not to hear the shots. After that first one, Bruce did better shooting. He is having the three sets of horns mounted by a skillful taxidermist and in due time they will ornament the recorder’s office at the court house. Bruce would like to wear one for a watch charm but its size forbids.
