DEATH OF EZRA C. NOWELS.
The parents and other relatives of Hon. Ezra C. Nowels, of Lamar, Colo., received the sad and shockingly sudden news Sunday, of his death, which occurred at 3a. m. that day at La Junta, about 50 miles west of Lamar, where he had presumably gone in pursuance of his vocation as' a practicing attorney. He was there taken with appendicitis, and died after a very brief sickness. His funeral .was held at Lamar, his home town, Monday. Two telegrams were received at the same time, one which was sent first but delaying in transmission, stated he was very dangerously sick, the other gave the news of his death. His brother, David B. Nowels, also of Lamar, was with him when he died. The deceased was the oldest surviving son of Mr. and Mrs. David Nowels, of our city, who survive him, at very advanced ages. He was born on the old Nowels farm north of Rensselaer, and would have been 57 years old next January. He leaves a widow and six children, all the latter of adult age except a boy of about 6 years. He also leaves three brothers, Wm. R. and C. D. Nowels, of our city and David 8., of Lamar; and two sisters, Mrs. R, H. Grow and Mrs. Robert Randle, both of Rensselaer. He was elected auditor of Japer county in 1878, and at the close of his term of office engaged in the practice of law. During President Cleveland’s first term he was appointed receiver of'public money, at the goverment land office, in Colorado, and later was county judge in Lamar Prowers Co. county seat. Since then he has practiced law at Lamar, and of which place be was’an enterprising and greatly esteemed citizeffl His last visit here was about two years ago, at which time he was seemingly in the prime of life and the picture of health and activity.
