Evidence of the need of doing something for the sea-carrying power of the United States is accumulating all the time. 1 Recent statistics show that one fourth the world’s ocean trade is in the hands absolutely of 30 large companies of various nationalities, and only one of these is American. This is the International Navigation Company, whose tonnage is scarcely a feather’s weight against the 5,616,000 tons of the 30 companies referred to. When we realize that within the past ten years England has built 4,638 steel steamers, with a capacity of 9,793,0C0 tons, while in the same time America has built only 465 steel steamers, with a capacity 743,000 tons, we begin to see the weakness of our position.—“ The Marine Journal.”
