The Monon's New "Battleships."
No. 300, one of the Mondn’s two monster locomotives which will haul the fast trains between Indianapolis and Chicago, is being limbered up and will be put in the regular service in a few days. It is what is known as the Chautauqua type of passenger engines and is the design of superintendent of Motive Power Wilson, of the Chicago & Rock Island, It is said to be the finest engine now in service, both as to [power and speed. It is different in many ways from any engine on the roads passing through this city. The fire box is eight feet in width on the inside. Under the fire box is a pair of trailer trucks. The engine is eqipped with a Pyle electric headlight, which, when the engine is pulliDg a train at a fast rate of speed through the country, gives the train the appearance of a fly ing meteor, Besides the headlight there are 15 incandescent lights on the engine. When the engineer gets down off his engine to oil or inspect it he need not take with him a torch, as there are lights under the running board. A small motor which gives the power for the lights is located near the steam dome near the cab. The engine will measure 15 feet and 10 inches from the rail >to the top of the stack. From the point of the pilot to the rear of the tank the engine will measure 65 feet 9 inches. Its greatest width is 10 feet 3J inches. The large drivers on the engine are 73 inches in diameter; the oyclinders are 20£ by 26 inches. Engineer Thomas Klein man Frank Lewis have been assigned regularly to the 300.
