Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 34, Number 15, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 22 October 1901 — Harvesting the Beet Crop. [ARTICLE]
Harvesting the Beet Crop.
F. Bedford is pulling bis sugar beets and preparing them for shippment to Benton Harbor, where they will be worked up by the sugar factory there, at the same scale of prices the Shelby factory was to have paid. Dan Sass, of Shelby, is here superintending the work of shipping. Mr. Bedford will ship 3 or 4 ear loads, this week. The beets are pulled by a 2 horse machine, which lifts them an inch or two but does not throw them out of the ground, which is an important point as the sun might injure them if thrown clear out. Mr. Bedford is well satisfied with the yield of his beets, and thinks he will be with the sugar per centage, but that is still to be determined. The yield will average 13 or 14 tons to the acre, and the best will go about 20 tons.
