Saturday’s Trotting Races

The entire sporting population of Mt. Ayr was over here Saturday afternoon, to see the races between the various more or less speedy trotters owned in that town and vicinity. The first race was between Mr. Haskell’s Tube Rose and Lester Miller’s Jennie, half mile heats. The Haskell horse won both heats. Time 1.28 and 1.27 f. In the second race there were four starters. Ed Harris’ Never Quit; Percy Lakin’s Go-as-you-please; Mr. Clark’s Sweet Dreams and Mr. Nichols’ 'Bleep} Jack. The Harris horse won in three straight half mile heats. Time 1.37,1.30, 1,38. The other horses usually finished in about the order named. Excitement ran high, at times, and some of the boys waxed quite reckless in backing their favorite horses with their cash. Even as muob, in the aggregate, as S2O is said to have changed hands on the second race, in bets, and fully half that immense sum on the first one
