GILLAM AND THE OIL FIELD.
Mrs. Steirs anl daughter Grace made a pleasant trip to St. Joe Michigan Sunday. Frank Osborne of Rensselaer made a short visit with his sister Mrs. Jennie Wilcox, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. George Coiner made a pleasant visit with relatives in Kewanna last week. The schools of Gillam began Monday. West Vernon has a good attendence and the patrons and pupils are very grateful to the trustee, Mr. J. Ryan for repairing their school room so nicely and sending back their old teacher Mortimer Prevo, this being his third term. Messrs J. C. Thrawls and Frank Osborne are up on the Gifford farms in the oil district, trying to locate the cornerstones, which haven’t been seen since “Uncle Sam” surveyed. They have been successful so far. The oil field seems to be alive, drilling, pumping, and shipping oil. The big pumping power on the Williams farm is beingjput in. Grandpa Murphy whose serious illness was mentioned last week, died last Friday morning at the home of his sons on the Cooper farm. The. Juneral was conducted by Elder White at the residence. The remains were laid to rest in the Independence cemetery. Deceased leaves an aged wife and five married children that will miss their father’s gentle voice and kind greeting. Grandpa Nichols is visiting old friends in Gillam this week.
