LEE AND EAST JASPER. Miss Ollie Thaver, of Miriooka, lIW is visiting relatives in this vicinity. A. B. Lewis sold some of his last spring’s heifer calves from his black herd for twenty dollars each and a male calf from the same herd also a spring calf for seventy-five dollars. Mr. and Mrs. I N. Matthews, of Brookston, visited relatives at this point last week Schools at Lee, and the Johnson opened last Monday but the schools in Hanging Grove and Milroy township will not open until next Monday. Miss Mary Gilmore I.ft Sunday for the east part of Monoa township White county, to take charge of her school. Schools closed Thursday to observe the holiday set apart as President Me Kinley's burial day. Mesdames Chas. Pape and Thos. Spencer returned from Chicago last week. Several parties from this point were in Rensselaer last week. Mrs. W. Noland and son, Samuel, visited with relatives at Morocco last week. C. C. Robinson spent a few days in Lafayette last week.
GILLAM AND THE OIL FIELD.
Mrs. Steirs anl daughter Grace made a pleasant trip to St. Joe Michigan Sunday. Frank Osborne of Rensselaer made a short visit with his sister Mrs. Jennie Wilcox, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. George Coiner made a pleasant visit with relatives in Kewanna last week. The schools of Gillam began Monday. West Vernon has a good attendence and the patrons and pupils are very grateful to the trustee, Mr. J. Ryan for repairing their school room so nicely and sending back their old teacher Mortimer Prevo, this being his third term. Messrs J. C. Thrawls and Frank Osborne are up on the Gifford farms in the oil district, trying to locate the cornerstones, which haven’t been seen since “Uncle Sam” surveyed. They have been successful so far. The oil field seems to be alive, drilling, pumping, and shipping oil. The big pumping power on the Williams farm is beingjput in. Grandpa Murphy whose serious illness was mentioned last week, died last Friday morning at the home of his sons on the Cooper farm. The. Juneral was conducted by Elder White at the residence. The remains were laid to rest in the Independence cemetery. Deceased leaves an aged wife and five married children that will miss their father’s gentle voice and kind greeting. Grandpa Nichols is visiting old friends in Gillam this week.
FAIR OAKS.
P, W. Nelson spent Sunday at St. Joe, Mich. A number of our people attended Old Settlers’ Meeting at Rensselaer last Friday and Saturdsy. Tbe Mt. Ayr band boys were in town last Saturday morning on their way to the Woodman’s picnic at Shelby, where they were engaged to furnish music for the oocasion. John Gilmore and family have moved to Goodland. Mrs. Isabella For was the guest of friends at Rensselaer a few days this week. And still another cheap excursion to Chicago next Sunday, Sept. 22, Only 75 cents round trip. Everybody go. Mr. Black, who was working for Sam Richey during his absence, left Monday for his home at Danville, 111. Mr. and Mrs. Mundon left Monday for Cleveland, Hancock county, Ind. to visit friends and relatives, They will also visit the state fair. Miss O’Laughlin, of Goodland, is teaching the school near Pern, broke, which opened last Monday. The two-iUoDths.old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hurley died on Thursday morning of last week and was buried the next day in the cemetery at this place. Miss Force, of Momenoe, 111., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Olds, at the Lawler ranch. Mr. and E, A. Sheppard arrived here last Saturday from Havana, Cuba and are the guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Zea. They are also visitidg relatives in Chicago a few days this week. Milt Gandy iB taking a vacation this week. Henry Goff, now of Spring Grove 111., who wu oalled here last week
on account of the death of Infant Hurley, returned last Monday, Henry has a good job as section foreman for the O. & N. W. Ry. at that place and will soon move his family there.
GIFFORD AND NEWLAND.
Mr. Louis Shell of McOoysburg was a Newland visitor Sunday. Art Akers called on Miss Blanche Blake Sunday. The excursion to St. Joe Mich Sunday was not very well patronized. Laßue Bros, will open a branch store at Gifford one day this week. Dee Dunfee returned from Winamac Friday wh»re he had been starting a saw mill which he purchased of Thurman Smith. John Wateon of Gil lam passed through here Saturday on his way to Rensselaer to attend the old settlers meeting. Wm. Hickman conductor on the C. W. V. will go to Illinoisjon a visit this week, it will be the first vacation he has taken in the past three years. There will be an entertainment at Gifford, Friday Sept. 20, consisting of music and oratory, given by Miss Roe Denn&son and Prof. Perkins Admission 15 and 25 cents.

Several from this vicinity attended the old settlers at Rensselaer. Grandma Henkle is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Shroyer. George Daniels did business in Rensselaer Tuesday Miss Mary Morgenegg visited Miss May Hayes Saturday night and Sunday. Mrs. Ora Bushong and mother were the guests of Miss Maggie Torbet Sunday evening. Harry Gifford was seen in these parts on business Tuesday. Those that took dinner at James Torbet’s Sunday were S. Hopkins and family, Ohsster Wray and family, Charley Hopkins and wife Miss Cheady Jordan, of Newland, Miss Cora Wray and Ed Miller’s children of near Parr. The first car load of peaches ever received in Rensselaer was this week by B. F. Forsythe, of the Chicago Bargain Store. Miss Mary Meyer has returned from Chioago, where she studied fall and winter styles in millinery and purchased a large stook. All ladies of Rensselaer and vicinity are invited to inspect the same. dw2w Frank Lear, the old reliable sewing machine and gasoline stove repairer is in town, this week. All his work is guaranteed. Orders left at Huff’s jewelry store will receive prompt attention.

As matters of permanent local interest connected with the death and funeral of our late lament© 1 president the following proclamation notices of eervic s and G. A. R. orders, are here republished from Wednesday's Evening Republican ’ To the Citizens of Rensselaer. Whereas, by hand of an assassin President McKinley died on Saturday, September 14, 1901, and as the final funeral service is to be held pt Canton, Ohio, on Thursday, September 19, 1901 :• And Whereas, the President of the United States has requested the people of the nation to suspend business matters so far as iti can be done on said day out of respect for our dead chief, I hereby earnestly urge and request that all places of business in this city be closed from the hour of 10 o’clock a. m. on said day until the hour of 12 o’clock noon on said day, in keeping with the request of the Piesident and as a further evidence of our respect for the dead. At the special meeting of the Common Council of this City held Monday, Saptsmber 16, 1901 this proclamation was approved, and the members of the Couucil personally urge all places of business to regard the same.
