Odds Are Still in Our P ayor.

Recent reports of the wonderful performances of Sir Thomas Lipton’s new yacht, Shamrook 1.1. have made it look as though the America’s cup was at last pretty near a goner, and that after holding it over 50 years, it was at last to be oaptured by the Britishers. And what has added to the scare is the further fact that the new boat The Constitution built on this side [to compete against Lipton’s new boat, has so far proven a failure and the races will probably have to be sailed by last year’s boat, the Columbia. But that the case is by no means hopeless is evident from the faot that some Pittsburg parties have just had the nerve to bet $250,000, good Yankee wealth against $150,000 of the British stuff, that the American boat would win again. So long as the betting men hold up their nerve at that rate, there is good grounds for thinking the oup will stay on this side of the water.
