DEATH IN CROSSING COLLISION.
Five Killed and Thirteen Hurt in Car Smash in Chicago. Five persons were killed and thirteen were badly hurt in a grade-crossing collision at 47th street and the Pennsylvania tracks, Chicago, at 8 o’clock Saturday evening, when a west-bound electric car ran through the gates and into an express train. Four were killed on the spot und the fifth died the following day. The others tfre expected to recover. Every precaution in the way of watchfulness on the part of railway employes of'both companies is said to have been observed. The guard gates were down and the electric car had been signaled'that a train was approaching. I*. H. Bowman was the motorman on the car. He says that he was uuable to stop it when he applied the brake as lie approached the gates. V. .1. Fulton, the conductor, bears ont that statement. Examination of the wrecked ear by the street-ear company’s experts brought the explanation from them that a broken brake rod was responsible for the accident. Thirty passengers were on the ear.
