Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 22, Number 96, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 20 August 1901 — Ex-Sheriff in Trouble. [ARTICLE]

Ex-Sheriff in Trouble.

Ex-Sheriff Joseph Sego of Porter county was arrested at Valparaiso Tuesday on oharge of forgery, caused by Don. A. Slayer, superintendent of the Valparaiso Water company. The arrest caused quite a sensation from the fact that but a month ago Sego had married the wealthly widow of John Leonard, at whose death she received $75500 and it was supposed he would be beyond criminal extremities in the conduct of his affairs. Sego called upon his wife for assistance but she refused and doubtless divorce proceedings will be a sequel to the arrest. While a drayman, Sego was elected sheriff of a strong republican county by the democratic party in 1890. His downfall is charged to unfortunate speculation on the board of trade.
