Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 22, Number 94, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 13 August 1901 — The Town od Asphalt. [ARTICLE]
The Town od Asphalt.
B. J. Gifford is now making another town in Jasper county and one which, from its location and surroundings may easily become a place of a good deal of importance. It is located at the terminus of the just completed oil-fields branch of his railroad, and is light in the center of the Gillam oil fields. The plotting of the new town was commenced Thursday, of this week. The new town has been given the novel but appropriate name of Asphalt. The reason for this choice of name is found in the fact that the oil found in that immediate locality is excellently adapted for making asphalt, and considerable quantities are already being shipped away for that purpose; and the erection of a big asphalt factory right at the town of Asphalt is a not unlikely enterprise of the near future.
