Two Hurt in Ruhaway.
A runaway that came near resulting rather seriously occuxed Monday afternoon, on the gravel road just north of Rensselaer. Miss Etta Donnelly and Miss Amy Knowlton were driving into town with Frank Donnelly’s horse and buggy. A man with a load of bay had stopped in the road, and he was down on the ground trying to drive on a loose tire. The young ladies drove around the load of hay and their horse was frightened at the man on the ground and started to shy off and run. The girls were thrown out almost immediately. The horse ran a short distance, upset the buggy in the ditch and then kicked itself loose, but was carght a little further on by some men. The buggy was badly demolished and the horse cut and scratched up some. Both the young ladies were considerably bruised* but Miss Knowlton’s injuries were the more serious. She was bruised fend scratched on the side of the face and head, the blow on the head causing some symptoms of concussion of the brain, which lasted all night. Her physician reports her much better now, however and thinks her symptoms only the result of her severe shaking up, and that she will soon be entirely recovered.
Increase in Tax Assessment.
The total increase over last year made by the state board of tax commissioners in its assessment of the corporate property of the state is $25,201,644. About $20,000,000 of this showing of increase is due to the operation of the new tax laws, giving the state board original jurisdiction in the assessment of street railway companies, pipeline companies and transportation car companies, leaving the actual increase something over $5,000,000. The cars of transportation companies have not been assessed before in Indiana. Their assessment alone this year adds $2,496,255. The increase in railroad property is $3,511,110. The assessment of the greater railway companies operating in the state does not show any increase over last year.
Women Growing Hostile.
There will be a big demand here for bullet proof clothing pretty soon, if shooting off of fire arms continues as promiscuous as it has for a few days past. Thus Saturday evening in a certain part of town someone took a shot at someone else; and a similar incident took place Sunday evening, in a different part of town. They were all different parties and in both cases the “man behind the gun,” happened to be a woman, and in one case the party shot at was a woman also. In that case the shooting is said to have been the rather emphatic method adopted by the shootess to discourage rubbernecking on the part of the shootee. The other case was to drive away some son of Belial who preaisted in intruding where he was not at all welcome.

Another Man Drowned In the Kankakee.
And still another death from drowning has ocotired in the Kankakee river- It happened on Monday afternoon* August sth. The victim was Jack Nolan, a section foreman of the Panhandle road, at Hebron. He and two companions were putting in the day on the river rowing up and down and Nolan was having great sport occasionally tipping the boat over and spilling his companions and himself out into the water. On about the third of these occasions, Nolan threw up ope arm and went down, and his companions thought he was only trying the depth of the river. He soon rose again and called for help, the men tried to reach him with an oar, but he sank again, and did pot rise again. It was thought he was taken with cramps, as the water was rather chilly. The body was recovered about dark the same day and taken back to Hebron. It is stated that he was not intoxicated. He leaves a wife and four children, at Hebron.
Rochester Right After It.
The people of Rochester and Rochester township, Fulton county voted on the proposition to vote about $40,000 bonus to the Tippecanoe Route, Tuesday. The vote was not quit) so unanimous as in Rensselaer in favor of the tax, but not so very much behind us eitherThe vote was eight to one in favor of the tax, and the majority was 900. Newcastle township, in the same county, also voted aid for the road the same day by 69 majority.
Hernley is Out.
Charles S. Hernley, chairman of the republican state committee has resigned and Jas. P. Goodrich, of Winchester, was chosen to fill the vacancy. There has been considerable opposition in different parts of the state to Mr. Hernley, which no doubt is due to the withdrawal from the duties of the office, but it is given out that his action was entirely voluntary. He will probably receive an appointment to some good government position.

RENSSELAER, JASPER COUNTY, INDIANA. FRIDAY AUGUST 9, 1901,
A new divorce case just filed in the circuit court for the September term, is that of John E. Erwin vs Julia B. Erwin. The plaintiff is universally known as Ed Erwin. The couple were married in February 1882 and was a runaway marriage, in Michigan, after a long and stormy courtship, there being violent opposition on the part of parents, and the bride being quite young. They lived together until Dec. 2nd, 1897, when, according to the complaipt. the defendant wholly abandoned the plaintiff. Besides the abandonment, the complaint alleges oruel and inhuman treatment in the way of neglect while the plaintiff was sick, and also the use of language toward him which he will not repeat to the sensitive ears of the court unless it is insisted upon. The complaint further plainly intimates that the plaintiff has a still stronger card up his sleeve, which he will produce if compelled to do so. In other words it says there are other grounds he can prove, if the court does not find the matters alleged in the complaint sufficient. The defendant has left the state, and the last letter he received from her she was at South Chicago. She took her two sons with her, but afterwards sent them back; and Donald 15 years old, lives with Mrs. Drake, just south of town, and Frederick 13 years old, with Isaac Blake, near Remington. They have good homes and the plaintiff wants their legal custody, so that he can keep them there.
Geo. Davis, of Lowell, deputy district game warden, was nosing around here Monday, looking for violators of the game laws. He did not make any arrests this trip, but it is understood he has got his pickets out in such shape that if any of our local pot-hunters and game hogs get to killing quails and prairie chickens before the law is out, under the name of “stubble-ducks,” jack-snipes etc., that he will bring them up with a short turn. It is certainly to be hoped that he will. It would be a good thing, also if some of the fellows who kill song and insect eating birds could be given a good dose of the law, also.
Prof. Anthony Schath, the present director of the Rensselaer Citizens Band, has tendered his resignation to take effect the latter part of this month. The professor’s work here is proving eminently satisfactory to the band, but he has been offered aso much better position in Cincinnati that he does not feel justified in remaining here. The Symphony Orchestra, at Cincinnati, with which he was formerly connected, has been re-organiz-ed, has offered Prof. Schath a much better place in it that be had before.

The County Commissioners.
The Commissioners completed the work of their regular August session Wednesday afternoon and adjourned. Three saloon licenses were granted: To George Ketchmark, o f Dunnville, Wm- W. Ballinger, of Kniman, and George Strickfaden, of Rensselaer. Warren Robinson made official report of the recent railroad election, in aid of the Chicago & Toledo Transfer R. R. Co. (Tippecanoe Route.) The Board ordered tho cause continued to June 1902, when further orders will be made, as the facts may then appear. A The commissioners declined to refund a portion of the saloon license fee of the late Robert Goodrick, as petitioned for by the administrator, Wm. B. Austin. Two highways petitioned for by, B. J. Gifford and one by John Kimble, were established. Also the John Hudson ditch. The contract for printing the county manual and other supplies for superintendent and recorder, was awarded to the Rensselaer Journal, at $63.80.
A Mountain of Iron.
B. S. Fendig, the great North American junk dealer, has just sold and shipped two car loads of iron from his stock, in. the rear of his place of business, bdt the taking away of two car loads, however, hardly makes an appreciable dimunition in bis pile. He thinks he still has the biggest pile of old iron in the state, and not unlikely he is right. He estimates he had about one million pounds in the pile before he shipped the two carloadsThis old iron was all once part of costly machines, vehicles, stoves etc., and it would probably be a low estimate to figure the cost of the iron, when new, at 10 cents a pound, or SIOO,OOO. Benny will sell it for very much less than that figure now, however.
Western Boys Make the Best Sailors.
W. E. Crfrtis, the noted newspaper correspondent, is now traveling in Europe and writing letters to the Record-Herald. The letter of a few days ago was from Christiana, Norway, and was devoted mainly to a description of the visit there of the U. 8- naval training ship, Hartford, which was Admiral Farragut’s flag-ship in the civil war. There are 500 young men on this ship training for naval service, one of whom is Marion Gwin, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Gwin, southeast of town. Mr. Curtis is unmeasured in his praises of these young men and says those from the west are far the finest in the ship. Their excellent deportment, especially when at * liberty on shore, is the admiration of every port they visit; and everywhere they are received with the greatest cordiality. It is a great cruise and a great opportunity for our young friend, Marion GwinBethany Park Assembly at Bethany Park, July 26, to Aug. 11, one fare for round trip.

A New “Hell Hole” in Lake County.
The Republican has received from Indianapolis a circular letter enclosing a poster, which, it is said, is being sent broad-oast, by the men backing the project. It gives pictures of what is termed the only Monte Carlo in AmericaOtherwise a huge gambling estab* lishmeut, where, according to the illustrations on the poster, any kind of gambling can be indulged in, as long as the dupe’s money holds out. 11 is located in Lake county, Ind., near the Standard Oil Company’s works, at Whiting. The huge building for this purpose is enclosed by a high board fence which is always well guarded. It is situated favorably so that three railroads run within a half block , of the place, the Pennsylvania being one of the three. Back of the enterprise are a number of Onicago’s wealthiest gamblers who up to this time have succeeded in keeping the facts quiet. Full operations will not begin until the race tracks about Chicago are closed when foreign book making will be carried on. No interference has yet been made. No Chicago paper has ever mentioned the existence of the place. Lake county officials are silent. None of the newspapers seem to know anything about it at all. The famous building was erected in one night. The carpenter work was done in pieces which were carried to this suitable spot on night about a month ago and put together. Not a soul in the vicinity knew anything about it until they saw the building standing the next morning. The poster above referred to makes the surprising statement. “No interference from county or state officials. Open the year around.” Atty. General Taylor is said to be investigating the matter and Gov. Durbin is quoted as declaring that the establishment will not be permitted to run. » The letter which accompanies this gamblers’ poster is as follows: TO THE CITIZENS Of THE STATE OF
INDIANA. The enclosed is being sent out broad oast by these vipers and corrupters of public morals who would debauch the youth of our State by their glowing invitation to visit this “hell-hole.” They have been banished from Illinois so have come to our State where as they brazenly say, they are immune from any molestation from our public officials. Are we going to remain passive and let this plague spot exist in our midst? What is th© .matter with the sheriff and other public officials? It looks as if they will not do their sworn duty. There is evidently something “Rotten in Denmark.” Stir your Governor to action; let him do what his predecessor our late deceased beloved Governor Mount did. Clean them out, if he cannot accomplish it with the County Machinery, then let him use the armed forces of the State if necessary, as the existence of this inferno is a blot on' the escutcheon of the State of Indiana

Lest We Forget The Game Laws
The Republican published the provisions of the new game law at considerable length, several months ago but hunters and would-be hunters have proverbially short memories especially for things they dont want to remember, and lest they forget whet the open season for prairie chickens and quails is, we repeat that portion of the law now. The new law changed the game season greatly, and it is now unlawful to shoot those birds until Nov. 10. The open season extends to Jan. Ist. The minimum punishment for killing any of these birds out of season, or even pursuing them, or having in possession, is a fine of $lO for each bird; and a jail sentence of 10 days may be added, also. The same provisions apply to “partridges” or ruffed grouse. The open season for squirrels is June Ist to Oct, Ist, and may last to Nov. 10th for those who procure a free license from the game commissioners. The duck and other water fowl season is from Sept. /Ist to April Ist, except that from Oct. Ist, to Nov- 10th, the special license must be procurred. The wild dove season is from August 15th to Jan. Ist, with the same provisions for special license from Oct. Ist to Nov. 10th. Hunting on enclosed lands at any time, without the owner’s or tenants consent is forbidden, at all times; so also hunting on Sundays. Nor can any kind of game be hunted with dog and shot gun between Oct. Ist, and Nov. 10th, unless the hunter hclds the special license, above mentioned. Non-residents of the state are subject to all of the above penalties and then some, for they must procure a state license at a cost of $25.50 before they can do any hunting or trying to bunt in this state.
Engineers Have Some Kicks Coming.
The Monon engineers have a grievance against the company. It is said that they are not satisfied as to the recent order that the men on the freight runs must learn both ends of the road and be prepared to run north and south out of Lafayette. The engineers do not warm up to this new rule. They argue that it is hard enough to know one division thoroughly. There are slso said to be complaints as to men receiving passenger runs who are not entitled to them. Enginemen who man the big “battleships” also think they should be pdd more than those who run the smaller engines. The questions are considered in no way serious and it is thought the trouble will be settled in a manner satisfactory to all when President McDoel returns from his vacation,
