Klondike Sinkhole Hard to Repair.
The Monon railroad does not intend to abondon, without a thorough effort to redeem it, the company’s right-of-way north of Cedar Lake, known as the “Klondike Sink-hole.” Since the trouble there a few weeks ago they have been trying to fill up the hole, and •bout 1,500 oar loads of rubbish or an average of about 40 car loads a day has been dumped into the apparently bottomless slough, and according to a railroad man, not the least bit of good has resulted The ground on each side of the right-of-way has been bulged up until it stands ten feet above the surrounding ground, but where the trouble exists the ground was no higher than it was before the dumping was begun. On last Saturday 5 cars of rock, 9 cars of old ties and 39 car loads of dirt were dumped into the hole and the track was thereby raised about two feet, but by Sunday morning it had settled back to its old level.
Its repair J seems an almost hopeless task, but the road authorities intend to dump every atom of rubbish along the Monon tracks from Chicago to Louisville into the hole before they abandon it. The grouting or culls from the Bedford stone quarries are being hauled there, about five car loads going through here each day for that purpose.
