Haykurst and children of Rockford, 111., came yesterday to visit Mrs. Jcseph Eight. Misses Sadie Smith and Julia Bernhardt of Chicago, are guests of A, Leopold and family. Mrs. Thoe. Lang, and children of near Surrey, returned yesterday from a month's visit in Indianapolis. Harry Wade, of Hammond is visiting his wife, who is at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. James Yeoman, west of town. Otis O. Oldfather, manager of Byers Bros.’ poultry houses in the Monticello district, was here yesterday evening. Mrs. Harry E. Wemple, of Rockford, 111., came today for a month’s visit with her mother, Mrs Agnes Kelley. Miss Bessie Eger returned today from her visit at Valparaiso. Her cousin, Clarence Griswold, came with her for a short visit.
Saturday, Aug. 31st, has been selected as the date of the White county old settlers’ day, to be held at Monticello. The Jasper county normal now being conducted by Profs. Murphey and Hiatt has an attendance of 26 teachers. Charles Lewis, of Barkley tp, who has been attending the summer term of the state university at Bloomington arrived home yesterday. I. N. Lewis of Barkley tp„ is Buffering from weak eyes and went to Lafayette today to consult a specialist. Paul Hodshire, who has enjoyed a five weeks’ vacation with relatives here, left today for Knightstown, where he is an inmate of the soldiers’ orphans’ home. Alfred McCoy, Taylor McCoy, George Strickfaden, Bay Thompson and Thompson Ross are squirrel hunting on the McCoy ranch, near Fair Oaks today. Wilbur Tharp went to Burnettsville on business today. He is now a general agent for the Security Life Insurance Company of Fort Wayne.—Monticello Journal.

A silver dollar, dated 1882, was found by John Richards, a - workman on the excavating branch of the new streets crew, yesterday. At Loganeport ..Tuesday John Rush, an overindulgent father, held hie small child up to one of the cages belonging to the John Robinson show, that the child might get a view cf the tiger inside. Wonder if the&Califomia papers are saying pleasant things about the excursionists now on thecqasi? A few years ago when they were treated to a like visitation, a LosAngeles paper said: “They came here with a white shirt and a five dollar bill each and didn’t change either during their sojourn in California.” C. C. Landon, formerly of Remington and a son of Dr. Landon of that place, arrived in Rensselaer today from Chicago, where he ie the assistant manager of the Boston dental parlors. He was met here by hi 6 wife and brother, Orie Landon, of Remington, with whom he went to that place for a two weeks’ visit.
The temperature for a few days has beqn most agreeable, at this point Tuesday the highest the government thermometer registered was 89, Wednesday 82, and during the night the mercury dropped below 60. The weather man has been merciful to the heat sufferers here, but at Delphi and Lafayette, where no rain has falleD, the temperature remains at near the 100 mark.
Mrs. Schuyler C. Robinson yesterday entertained about sixteen young lady friends at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Washburn, in honor of her friend and guest, Mies Mamie Morrison* of Wheaton, 111. The hours from 2 to 6 o’clock were very pleasantly spent in music, song and games. Refreshments were served and a most delightful time is reported. A “porch party”' was given to fourteen young ladies yesterday afternoon from 3 to 6 o’clock by Miss Luella McCoy at the home of her parents, in honor of the 21st birthday of Miss Loathe Wright. The party derives its name from the fact that the guests were entertained on the large porch at the McCoy home. Music, games and refreshments made the afternoon thoroughly enjoyable.
