Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 22, Number 89, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 26 July 1901 — Lee Will Not Be Pardoned. [ARTICLE]
Lee Will Not Be Pardoned.
William H. Lee, the oldest time man in the state prison, whose case was given at length a few days ago, will not be pardoned by Gov. Durbin. The governor has written to that effect to Mrs. Elizabeth J, Tea, at Battle Ground. She, as before stated, is the widow of the man Lee was oonvicted of murdering, 33 years ago, and she is afraid to have Lee turned loose. Probably the fact that Lee is incapable of caring for himself and is better off in prison than he would be out, had as great an effect in deciding the governor against his pardon, as did Mrs. Tea’s seemingly unreasonable fears.
