Governors’ Wives Living.
It is an interesting and curious fact that while not a single exgovernor of Indiana is alive the widow-of every governor for the last 40 years who was the wife of a governor during his regime is alive and well, The widow of Henry S. Lane is living atCrawfordsville. The widow of Oliver P. Morton lives in Indianapolis and a pension of SSO a month from a grateful state keeps the wolf from the door. The widow of Thomas A. Hendricks who was left a fortune, lives in the old Hendricks home under the very shadow of the state house. The widow of Governor Chace is in poor oirounstances. The widow of Gov, Gray lives in Indianapolis and the widow of Gov Mathews at the old home place in Vermillion county, which she inherited from her father, Gov. Whitcomb. Gov. Matthews was not a successful farmer and ran about $40,000 in debt, but through heavy life insurance he left the large place about as free from debt us he found it. The widow of Gov. Mount lives on the farm at Shannondale, which Gov. Mount obtained by his brain and brawn. It seems that the strain incident to getting the office of governor and the work while in the office is too much for any ordinary man.
