Newton County People Killed.
In a Railroad Wreck In Mis souri. A very bad railroad wreck occured on the Chicago & Alton road in Missouri, Wednesday morning, about 7 o’clock, caused by aljolliesion with a freight train. A party of Newton county people were on the train, going to California, on the Epworth League excursion. Qf these Mrs. Lorena Gilman, wife of Fred Gilman, the well known banker of Goodland, was instantly killed. Miss Lulu Rider, daughter of Geo. Rider, of Kentland, was so badly injured that she died on the way to the hospital, Miss Dora Wickwire, sister of the Newton Co. sheriff, who was drowned a year or two ago had her hip dislocated, and is otherwise injured, but will recover. The city papers also state that a daughter of Mrs. Gilman’s was killed also, but that was a mistake, as she had none of her children with her. She leaves six children, all quite young. All three of these people are well known in Rensselaer, where each had several intimate friends and had often visited here. Mr. Gilman and others have left to bring back the bodies, for interment. at their respective homes. Mr. Gilman was here Wednesday, the day of the wreck, on business leaving on the 1:45 p. m. train, and being, at that time, entirely unaware of the great calamity that had befallen him.
