Lieutenant Tucker, of the Regular Army
Bates Tucker, whose recent return from the Philippines was noted at the time, arrived from Ridgeville Wednesday evening, in company with his father, Rev. D. A. Tucker, for a short visit in this his former home. Bates, as many of our readers know, was one of the two first boys from Jasper county to enlist for the Spanish war. Ernest Middleton and he enlisting in the 159th Indiana regiment, together. Almost as soon as his term of service was out he enlisted again, in the 31st. U. S. Volunteers, in which he served two years, and 18 months of which were in the Philippines, in the rank of coporal. He was stationed in the Island of Mindanoa, and was assigned to the engineering department.' He was at all times a model soldier, as he is also a model young man, faithful to all his duties, studious, strictly temperate and strictly moral. These excellent qualities have, since his return, received very substantial, but well deserved recognition. He has been commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the regular army. This, as all army men know, is a relatively much higher and more desirable position than the same rank in the volunteers. It also carries with it a good salary, and high social honor. He has not yet been assigned to any regiment, but soon will be, and not unlikely will be again sent to the Philippines. The salary is $116.66 per month in America, and $125 in foreign countries or the islapds.
