ANXIETY FOR MRS. M’KINLEY.
Condition of the Wife of the President Is Again Serious. Mjs. McKinley’s condition Is not so favorable as many of her friends hoped it would become immediately upon her return to Washington. On the contrary, now that she is comfortably settled in her home at the White House, It seems to be quite evident that the attack from which she suffered in California has left her in a condition which would be extremely critical for one who is not possessed of her marvelous recuperative powers. There is no crisis, but on the other, hand, the illness is extremely serious, and there is a fear that while the crisis was passed in California, it has left the patient so enfeebled that she seems entirely unable to rally. Those who are in and out of the sick room realise the fact that the wife of the President has undergone so great a strain that a collapse may come at almost any moment. She has jested a great deal since she returned to Washington. There is not the slightest attempt at the White House to deceive any one as to the' gravity of the situation. At the same time the statement is made officially that there is no necessity for the spread of alarming reports. There is no truth in the report that there was anything like a crisis Thursday night, or that members of the family were telegraphed for. On the contrary, the distinctly unfavorable feature of the case is the fact that there is so slight change in the patient’s condition. Improvement in her condition Is by no means impossible, but it does not now appJhr to be probable.
