Origin of Memorial Day.
r - The idea of Memorial Day originated among the women of Maryland, who put flowers on the graves of both Federal and Confederate long before the surrender of Appamattox. The women of other States soon began following the custom. In 1869 Gen. John A. Logan, as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, appointed May 30 for that purpose. Every person is responsible for all the good within the scope of his abilities, and for no more, and none can tell whose sphere Is the largest.—Gall Hamilton.
