Mrs. Charles Porter is visiting in Delphi this afternoon. - E. L. Hollingsworth spent Sunday with his wife at Kalamazoo, Mich., returning home today. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Stoner went to Chicago this morning to attend the Poultry Show at the Coliseum. Councilman John F. McColly, of the firm .of Coen & McColly, is sick with pleuro-pneumonia. Born Tuesday Jan. 22nd, to Mr and Mrs. Emmet Pullins, of Barkley tp., a son. The 13 year old daughter of Alfred Peters, southeast of town, is sick with peritonitis. Mrs. W. O. Rowles has gone to Chicago for a few weeks’ specia study in oil painting. Mrs. Ray Thompson is spending a few days with relatives and friends at Lafayette. Jesse E. Wilson went to Crown Point this morning for a few days’ stay on legal business. Mr. and Mrs. B. Forsythe went to Chicago this morning to purchase their stock of spring goods. Merle Benjamin returned to the Indiana Mineral Springs today for a few more weeks’ treatment for his rheumatism.
C.' C. Warner returned this afternoon from several days’ visit with friends and relatives in Chicago. Superintendent L. H. Hamilton is visiting the Wheatfield schools and others in that vicinity this week. G. H. Landis, of Delphi is the guest for a few days’ of his daughters, • Mrs. Floyd Robinson and Mrs. Mel Abbott.
A. R. Rishling, Chas. Murray and Wm. Tanner have gone to Logansport for a short business stay. Word from Joe Jeffries, sent on Monday, says his father, Rev. C. D. Jeffries, is very bad and likely to die at any moment. Grant Warner went to Mt. Ayr this morning to invoice a stock of hardware in the Ashby Hardware store, which has been purchased by Thos. Willey.
Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Yeoman, of Kingman, Kans., who have been the guests of relatives here since Friday, left for their homib this morning. Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Bischoff, of Bradley, 111., who were called here last Thursday by the sickness of her sister, Miss Mary Moore, re* turned home today. The Chicago American is working the Mike Lawler sensation for all it is worth, and in its later editions today, has his picture and that of the dead girl, on the front page.
Moses E. Clapp, whom the Republican legislators of Minnesota have selected to fill Senator Davis’ unexpired term, was a native of Carroll Co., this state. He was born near Pittsburg, that county, 49 years ago. Ellsworth W. Weir, a prominent attorney and politician, of LaPorte, was shot Saturday night and dangerously wounded, by Joseph W. Brill, of Cleveland, Ohio. Weir was attorney for Mrs. Brill in a suit for divorce, and Brill demanded that Weir sign a confession that he had been intimate with Brill’s wife. Weir refused and Brill shot him.
C. B. Steward was scared a good deal and hurt some, at his house, a few evenings ago. He lighted a lamp and then dropped the match where it set fire to a lace curtain. The curtain was ruined, several breadths of carpet greatly damaged and also a conch standing near. Mr. Stewarts’ hands were also quite badly burned in extinguishing the fire.
Jule Walters and his Company made their second appearance here last evening in the novelty comedy Side-Tracked, and were greeted by a large and well satisfied audience, The special scenery was extensive and very lifelike, such as a moving train, a freight car, locomotive etc. Also a court room, lunch room, lunch counters etc. The tramp was there also, riding his grind-stone. The song and dance specialties were also well received. From here they went to Kankakee, 111.
