FIERCE DUEL IN OHIO.
TWO FARMERS ENGAGE IN A DESPERATE FIGHT. Removal of Rusty Knife Blade from Foine’s Head Brines Ont Story—Syracuse, Ind., Suffers Loes of Entire Block of Business Buildings. The removal of a rusty knife blade 1% inches long from the brain of Fred Foine, a prominent Henry County farmer, has brought to light one of the fiercest duels ever fought in Northwestern Ohio. Two years ago Fred Foine and his neighbor, Henry Schroeder, were the best of friends, till a quarrel occurred over the Use of another neighbor’s complanter. A few days ago Foine left for his home |n a buggy, and, knowing that his old enemy would Vass that way, secured" a rock and secreted himself. Soon Schroeder came along on his horse and was hurled to the ground by a blow on the head from a rock. • Foine viciously jumped on his victim, biting iand striking him with the rock. Too weak from his fall to ward off his assailant, Schroeder drew an old, rusty pocket-knife and stabbed Foine in the head and face. Schroeder escaped by crawling in the darkness to a near farmhouse. Foine went home, but the next day, from ex-< posure and his undressed wounds,, became violently ill. A few days ago the wound was opened. A magnet was applied and resulted in the extraction of the rusty knife blade. Foine, though in a critical condition, may recover. Schroeder has sold his fijrm and will leave the country. MURDER IN ZANESVILLE. Mrs. Vina Grady la Found Dead—Negro Barber in Custody. Mrs. Vina Grady, white, and a member of a prominent family, was brutally murdered in the front room of her home in Fountain alley, Zanesville, Ohio. Adrian Madison, a colored barber, known to be infatuated with the woman and who was seen by her children to leave the house with his clothing covered with blood, is in custody, charged with the crime. The woman’s skull was crushed with a blunt Instrument, but the doctors who held the post-mortem examination give it as an opinion that the woman was choked to death. Madison insists that the woman was well when he left the house and claims the blood on his clothing came from the nose.
BLAZE IN INDIANA TOWN. Entire Block of Business Houses Burned at Syracuse. The Town of Syracuse, Ind., suffered loss by fire of an entire block of business buildings. The loss is estimated between $25,000 and $30,000, with but $5,000 insurance. The principal losers are: Weyrlck & Hinderer, dry goods; S. L. Ketring, brick building; F. L. Hoch, drugs; 11. E. Sloan, restaurant; C. 11. Conrad, grocery; Miller & Lehman, notions; Mrs. M. A. Benner, millinery, and Dr. B. F. Hoy, office building and fixtures. Syracuse has no protection against fire. A bucket brigade worked six hours to keep'the Hames from spreading. Girl Student Killed by Negro. Eliza Newkirk, a student at Vorhies Business College, Indianapolis, was shot and killed by Morris Jones, a negro who had been employed as janitor in the college building. The negro then killed himself. Miss Newkirk is said to have been a member of a prominent family in Friendsville/111. It is believed the negro killed her in revenge when he was discharged from the college. Suicide of a Yale Graduate. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Robert Callender, the 25-year-old son of Walter Callender, has been fathomed. The young man’s body was found in the town of Cranston. He had, while laboring under temporary derangement of mind, taken his life by shooting himself. Boy Shoots His Sister. While William Chichester and his wife, who reside down the river from Marietta, were absent trading, Thomas, a 9-year-old son, emptied both barrels of a double-barreled shotgun into his sister Florence, aged 14. killing her instantly. Kills Sweetheart and Himself. Duncan Mclntyre fatally shot Miss Etta Anderson at her residence in Corrilios, N. M.. because she declined to marry him. He then shot himself, dying instantly. Miss Anderson died in about thirty minutes. ' Seven Killed and Forty Wounded. According to a dispatch from Vienna, seven miners were killed and forty wounded in an affray at Altgebirg, Hungary, between riotous miners and gendarmes. Children Burn to Death. At Oast a score of children are dead as the result of a fire that destroyed the hospital section of the Rochester, N. Y., Orphan Asylum, Express Train Kills Men and Team. Wells-Fargo express. No. 14. on the Erie Railroad, struck a wagon at Meadville, Pa., killing the occupants, A. J. Holland and Charles Seeley. Young Man Killed by a Woman, Henry Dy res, aged 17, was shot and killed by Mrs. Sevose, a Frenchwoman, at Fleming, Kan. 11 Big Auditorium Is Flanne l. Ah. entire family of five persons lost thelt lives in a fire in Model Town, near, Niagara Falls. N. Y. It included Mr. and Mrs. E. 11. Taylor and their three children, 1, 3 and 5 years old, respectively.
