Don’t This Jar You?
The Reformer Has Alj-o Turned Philanthropist. Who could have Thought it? Our great and noble Reformer of the Democrat, after all he has struggled and suffered and sacrificed for the good of au ungrateful people in his career as a reformer is now voluntarily adding to his own present sorrows and future glory by appearing as a professional philanthropist. f Just think! He offers to publish the next delinquent tax list for $25 and to publish the commissioners’ allowances, hereafter, at two cents each! How he does love the dear people! And how the dear people do love hinf! The publication of the tax list in this county usually costs from S4O to SBO and the commissioners' allowances 5 cents each. Hence haw great is the sacrifice this thrice reformer and philanthropist is willing to make to'save tlie people’s money! Perish the thought on the part of anyone that his motive is to beat that wicked Republican man out of those jobs. Nay, it is all benevolence, pure, noble, exalted’benevolence. Verily, how we have all misjudged and persecuted this noble, saintly nature. Why. we are now even convinced that his only reason in charging the county two prices for those election ballots was that he might give these other sinful, selfish editors an object lesson. He no doubt intended, as soon as he got the money to voluntarily pay half of it right back into the county treasury, and not even ask that a single that he so paid back be credited on the back taxes he has heretofore somehow found it inconsistent with his standing as a reformer, to pay. Verily, we should not be surprised any day, to hear that Reformer Philanthropist Babcock, had walked into the treasurer’s office and thrust with his blessing, into the treasurer’s hands, the biggest end of that $l5O he got last winter for publishing the board of health rules, included the S2O or $25 he “raised” by using that fake stereotype plate. Such action on his part will only be in line with the noble philanthropy of his stand in the tax list and commissioners’ allowances. And when be makes this noble but expected restitution, his name shall be no longer Reformer nor even Philanthropist, but Saint. ‘•Tour blessing. Saint faab! Your blessing. Give ns your blessing, sweet!" The children will cry, as be goes by, In triumph down the street.
