Pottawattomies Want LaPorte.
A dis-patch from St. Joseph, Mich., says: Charles L. Pokagon, only surviving son and heir of the late chief of the Pottowattomie tribe of Indianp, Simon Pokagon, was in the city today en route to LaPorte, Ind., where he will take legal measures to put himself in possession of a tract of land now worth millions of dollars. The land covers the entire site of the city of LaPorte. Mr. Pokagon has documents in his possession showing that the government, by virtue of the treaty with the Indians Oct. 26, 1836. and afterwards embodied iu the treaty of Jan. 10. 1846, issued a patent for an entire section of laud to Chief Pokagon, at that time the head of the Pottowattoinies. Chief Pokagon was the father of the late Simon Pokagon and grandfather of the present claimant. To which we would add that if Chief Charley Pokey really wants to get wealthy in a hurry he had better buy a bucksaw and go to sawing wood. He will get there much quicker that way than by trying to establish his ownership to the city of LaPorte.
