The Ladies Literary Society Anniversary.

■3 A large number of the most refined and cultivated people of our town, met at Mrs. Alfred Thompson’s at 7:30, Fri. evening, in response to invitations given out, by the Ladies Literary Club, who were celebrating their annual meeting. The exercises were short, and very interesting. After Invocation by Rev. Ward and a few words of greeting by their president Mrs. S. P. Thompson the

roll was called, and a quotation from Shakespeare given in response, by each member. The program was varied. Mrs. Honan gave a reading from Eugene Field, Mesdames Hollingsworth and English a vocal duet, and Mrs. Pearl Wood, and Miss Reed vocal solos. These were beautifully rendered, and thoroughly enjoyed. Mrs. Melle Medicus’ medley of J. Whitcomb Riley’s poem was her own work, and while every union of different verses fitted perfectly, the changes from sublime to the rediculous were very surprising and delightful. She read it in a way, that could not be improved upon. To Mrs. Frank Foltz was assigned the difficult task of reading extracts from various lengthy letters, from absent and non-resident members, Mrs. Foltz is a most excellent reader, as well as speaker, and the extracts she read were chosen with such judgement, and the letters themselves were so interesting, especially as the writers were so well known, in the past by most of the guests, that this programme was eagerly heard by all. The writers were Mrs. Borroughs, Mrs. Della Thompson, Mrs. Rosa Seib, Mrs. Stella D wiggins, Mrs. Geo. Dexter, Mrs. Charles Price, Mrs. Alice Dunlap and Mrs. Mollie Babcock.
