The Bench Fed the Bar.
One of the most notable Thanksgiving events in Rensselaer was a dinner given by Judge 8. P. Thompson, Thursday, at the Nowels House. It was specially designed for the members of the Jasper County bar, and officers of the court, with their wives or other lady relatives or friends. The clergy and the press were also represented. About 60 guests were present all told. They took their seats at the tables a little before one, and each genteman responded with a sentiment, as his name was called, after which a fine turkey dinner, properly embellished was served. Following this came a“Symposium” with five mihute speeches, by the following: On the Thanksgiving Festival. “The Jewish” Moses Leopold. “The Puritan” Jesse E. Wilson, “The American” Charles E. Mills On “Why Thankful:” “The Citizen” G. K. Hollingsworth. *“The State” W. H. Parkison, “The Church” Rev. C. D. Royse “The Courts” W. H. Cooyer “The Lawyers” C. W Hanley “Our Holidays” E. P.Honan. Votes of thanks were unanimously adopted to Mr. and Mrs. Penn of the Nowels House, for their excellent feast, and to the hosts Judge and Mrs. Thompson, for their generous and gracious hospitality.
