THE REPUBLICAN ~ r ' r IT "' ■■ '• OFFICIAL PAPER OF JASPER COUNT ORce In Republican-building on the corner of Washington and Weston streets, ISSUED EVERY TUESDAY aND FRIDAY BY GEORGE E. MARSHALL, EDITOR AND PUBLISHER. Term* of Subscription. One Year $1.50 Six months 75 Three Months 50 Tuesday, Noyember 13,1900.
The realization of the terrible truth that their mutual scrapping caused the defeat of Bryan, as per Orator Honan’s celebrated message read Tuesday night at the court house, is likely to have a very- sobering effect on the respective editors of the Jasper County Democrat and the Democratic Sentinel. Already the effect is noticeable, and in last week’s issue •‘Bab’y,” doesn’t hit “Barnacle” a single dig. One of the reasons advanced by Mr. Bryan for his defeat, was that the Democrats did not have money enough to bring their absent voters home. A much more important reason than that however, was their want of judgement in not keeping Bryan himself, at home. His demagogic appeals to hate and prejudice, and his praising Tammany and hob-nobbing with Croker, lost him ten votes where their want of money to bring home absent voters lost him one.
The total combined vote in the county for the heads of all the presidential tickets, was 3765. The combined vote for the two county tickets averaged 3,609. The difference between 3,765 and 3,609 is 156. And that means that practically 156 voters in the county lost their votes on the county ticket. They did it by marking the first name instead of the big square for a straight ticket, and by trying to scratch when they did not know how. It looks like the voters would never all learn how to vote the Australian ballot, in the complicated form and stringent rules jirevailing in this state. It is worth while to devote a few minutes to studying the official returns from Keener] township. Previous to the election the Democrats had a dead sure cinch (to hear them tell it) on that township. They were sure of it on two grounds. Alleged dissatisfaction over the township gravel road matter, and the defection of the Hollanders on account of the Boer war. The returns show, however, that the Republican carried the township by larger majorities than ever. In 1898, the Republican majority on the state ticKet there was 93 and on congressman 84. This year McKinley’s majority is 101 and Crumpacker’s 102. The county ticket was also voted remarkably straight In that township.
