Ellis Declines, Spitler Appointed.
Other City Council Matters. The City Council met in regular semi-monthly session, Monday night, with mayor and five coucilmen present 1 J. H. 8. Ellis declined the appointment as councilmen from the second ward, to succeed John Eger elected mayor, and C. G Spitler was appointed. He received four votes and F. M. Parker one. A side-walk was ordered from the corner of Washington and River streers, west to Milroy and south on that street, in all a distance of 740 feet, all fronting Mrs. M. E. Thompson’s property. A remonstrance will be filed. Lingren, Mahan & Co. of Cleveland, the parties of whom the now disused chemical engine was purchased, have written that they will put it in as good shape as new for $159. The offer for it after being so repaired is $l5O. Therefore the city, if it accepts the offers will be out the machine and $9 in money. More favorable offers will be looked for it is needless to say. An ordinance was introduced and passed to the 2nd reading forbidding all riding or driving on the city side-walks, and is made especially applicable to bicycles. The penalty for- each violation is a fine not to-exceed $3 and costs. The bond of H. P. Kurrie, city attorney, was approved. C. J. Dean was elected president of the council to preside in the absence of the mayor. The-Mayor appointed standing committees, as follows: On streets, alleys and sidewalks, McCollv, Dean, Spitler. Ordinances, purchasing and claims, Porter, Dean, Kannal. Fire department, sewers and drains, Chilcote, Kannal, Porter. Water and lights, Spitler, Chilcote, McColly. Twenty-seven’ claims, amounting to $529.19 were allowed.
