Fairbanks Was Here.
And Made a Great speech To a Great Audience. Senator Fairbanks arrived from Indianapolis, at 6:30 p. m. Tuesday evening, as expected. After taking supper, at the Makeever House he proceeded to the Republican club room, on Van Rensselaer st. where for half an hour he held an informal reception, meeting and shaking hands with a large number of our citizens, all in his always gracious and friendly manner. His speech at the opera house began at a quarter to 8, and was preceded by a song by the Republican glee club. Mr. Fairbanks was introduced to the audience by County Chairman Hanley. The crowd present was very large. Every seat was tilled updairs and down, and about 60 old voters sat on.the platform. Besides there were about 100 standing up. All told, the crowd numbered about 600, and many went away because unable to obtain seats. Mr. Fairbanks spoke an hour and three quarters, holding the undivided attention of the audience, with numberless outbreaks of the heartiest applause. The larger part of the speech was devoted to the new issue of alleged imperialism. The falseness and humbuggery as well as the unpatriotism of the Bryanite stand in this respect were shown so clearly and plainly that no one need be mislead by if, who is willing to listen to the truth. It was a great speech, worthy of our great senator. • The meeting closed with another much appreciated song by the glee club and three rousing cheers for McKinley. The senator remained here until next morning, and then went to Crown Point, where he spoke that night. Thursday night he was at Winamac.
