Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 21, Number 104, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 18 September 1900 — Wolcott For State Senator. [ARTICLE]
Wolcott For State Senator.
The Republican believes now, as fully as it did three months ago, that Wm. H. Coover, of Rensselaer was the rightful nominee of the Goodland convention, for state senator; and that he was wrongfully deprived of the nomination by the unwarranted actions of a few political schemers from Newton county. But the friends of Mr. Coover have let slip all opportunities to have the wrong made right. Their best opportunity, was to have organized and held a separate convention, right then and there. This, in the excitement of the occasion. they forgot to do. After that, remained the opportunity to nominate a candidate by petition whioh movement was felt to be Newton county Republicans’ place to do. That has uot been done, aud all talk of it has now been abandoned. ' ... Hence Mr. Wolcott’s name will be upon the ticket as the legal and only Republican candidate. It is therefore “up to” the Republicans of Jasper county to decide whether they will vote for him, or for his democratic opponent, or not vote for seuator at all.
Personally and politically Mr. Wolcott 1 is an excellent man, and one to whom, except for this cloud on his nomination, the Republicans of Jasper county would have been proud to give their unanimous support. A^it is, it is in some sort a choice between two evils, bat we believe the least of these will be to vote the ticket straight, just as printed, and trust to the future for some more favorable opportunity to teach the Newton county schemers a very salutary lesson. It is very important, for one thing, to have an able and unswerving Republican like Mr. Wolcott in the state senate for the next four years, for many important laws, including the redistricting the state for congressional and legislative purposes, will come up for action. Moreover, a United States senator wiiljbe elected before the four years are up, to succeed Senator Fairbanks, and it might easily happen that the vote from this senatorial district would turn the scale between him and a Democrat.
Thus in voting for a State Senator this time, we are not only voting for fair apportionment laws, fair fee and salary laws, nonpartisan state institutions, but also for a United States Senator. We can’t afford to vote the wrong way on all those points. It should also be remembered, too, that Mr. Wolcott’s democratic opponent, though a very estimable man personally, is as thoroughly and uncompromisingly a partisan Democrat as the whole three counties could produce. Therefore we place the name of Eben H. Wolcott, (he officially legal and only Republican nominee for senator, upon cur ticket, and now as always, advise Republicans to cross the eagle square, and vote the ticket straight.
