There was a big c<owd at Mt. Ayr’s “gala day” last Saturday , afternoon, including a large deletion from Rensselaer. A horseshoe pitching contest, to ! determine the joint championship lof Jasper and Newton counties was one of the most interesting events of the day. It was between | John C. Carmichael, of Rensselaer ( champion of Jasper and Mr. Butts, of Mt. Ayr, champion of Newton 1 county. It was to oonsist of eight j innings or games, the winner of five to be the champion. Mr. Carmichael, however, won the first five games, hand running, and the other then was not played. A game of baseball between Mt. Ayr and Surrey, Mt. Ayr won by a score of 18 to 7. At about 7 o’clock there was a very successful balloon ascension, by Prof. Eckhardt; also high wire walking. A movement is on foot to bave him give the same performances here next Saturday.
