A Soldier is Talking.
He Wants to Cast a Vote tor Expan. sion. [Spec’'*' to the Indlpna; ills News.] Wabash, Ind,, August 17.—Max G. Philips of Kosciusko county, has been appointed an instructor of the Filipinos, and placed in charge of the school at Lucena. province of Tayobassouthern Luzon. Mr, Philips was corporal of Company A. Thirtieth Infantry, and was a good soldier, In a letter written to relatives, dated July 3, Corporal Philips tells of his appointment to a “professorship.” “My pupils,” he says, “range in age from six to thirty years, several being married. They are very anxious to learn any and all things Americano. All are bright and quick to ‘catoh on.’ I teach only two hours in the morning, from 8 to 10 o’clock, and have one class from 7to9p. m. It interesting work, and my school is well attended. Lucena is a city of 10,000 inhabitants, on the China sea, and is a very busy place at this season. The old men tell us they have never had such prosperity as they have enjoyed since the United State soldiers occupied the town and province, and that peace, until now, was unknown. The Filipinos have discovered we are their friends and want us to stay. To-morrow my school will celebrate the glorious Fourth, the first celebration of the kind ever held in this portion of the island. Public schools will soon be started and in other post towns of the province, and elsewhere on the island. I only hope I can get home in time to put in a life-size vote for expansion.”
