FRIDAY. James Mauzyof Boswell was in our city today. , f Mrs. J. N. Leatherraan is quite sick with tonsilitis. Mrs. J. F. Warren is now confined to her bed by sickness. Mrs. Isabelle Fox, is severely sick, today, with a stomach trouble W. B. Austin is at Knox and Chicago on real estate business. Geo. Hosiner went to Winamac today for a short business stay. Korah McKillie, of Wolcott, was in our city .today on business. Born Friday, April 20, to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Schofield a 9 lb. son. - • ' ‘ Mr. and Mrs. A. D.. Washburn and son, of Fair Oaks were in our city today. City Marshal McGowan has jus! finished up a good job of cleaning Washington street. John Gray arived last evening from Luray Kans., and is the guest of Miss Maude Jacks. ■; Mrs. Mary Drake went to Chicago today to visit with her moth er for a few days. Mrs. Elizabeth Brown is improving slowly, and is now able to be up most of the time. Mrs. John Gaffey of Gifford returned today from four weeks visit with her daughter in Chicago.
Misses Ida and Jennie J etz went to Francesville today for a few days’ visit with their parents. J. J. Montgomery went to Rose Lawn today to superintend the telephone lines he is putting up. Miss Nancy Potts after a two weeks' visit with her father returned to Indianapolis this afternoon. Mrs. C. W. Clift and baby Beatrice, went to Chicago,-today, for a short visit with her husband . and
friends. Geo. and H. H. Barcas went to Chalmers today., having received word that their father was seriously sick. * Mrs. Ben Oglesby and children returned to Medary ville today after two weeks’ visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Haas. John Carr, Austin Haas, Vernon Robinson, Earl Houseman and James Drake went to Morocco today to work for a few months. Eph Hickman has concluded his engagement with Postal’s Hypnotic circus, and is portering for the Nowels House. Miss Edna Thompson of Defiance, Ohio, came today and is the guest of lver sister Mrs. Victor Moore near Pleasant Ridge. Mrs. J. H. Wishard returned today, from two weeks’ visit at Indianapolis, where they attended the wedding of their |ou Ernest, and at Greenwood. A notice of his house to rent in The Republican brought Uncle Ellis Walton two applicants the first day. Mrs. Isaac Parker securred the building. Paul Macus and Frank Marriott both of Parr have gone to the northwestern part of lowa for work on the C. M. & St, Paul R. R. through the agency of J. B. Sayler. Mrs. Joe Austin and children of Wliqatfield took the train here yesterday afternoon to visit her husband, today, at the Fletcher Hospital. Indianapolis. She reports Mr. Austin is improving under his hospital treatment. Prof. Billy Postal has concluded his successful hypnotic tour through Newton county, and is home here for a few days. He will give one more entertainment here, soma evening next week, before he starts out on a more extended tour.
Dr. Erhest May hew and his newly acquired bride, arrived from Chicago today, for a brief visit with RIB. Porter and other friends. They will leave for their home at Red Bluffs, Calif., in a day or two.
Rev. C. D. Jeffries’ family have taken their departure for their future home in Ohio, part of them leaving last night and part this morning. Mr. Jeffries will remain here until next month, and together with his son, Joe, of Ellis & Murray is making his home with Mrs. There will be regular services at the First Baptist church next Sunday, both morniDg and evening. Morning subject, “Adoption.” Evening subject, ‘‘Moses’ Wise Choice.” All are cordially invited to attend these services.
The Women’s Missionary spring conference, of the Monticello Baptist Association,* was held at Monon, Thursday. Mrs. R. B. Porter and Mrs. Ruby Barcus were messengers from the Rensselaer church. Mrs. Barcus had a place on the program for a paper entitled “What is Self. Denial?” The retirement of both Dr. Bell and Horace Marble, as candidates for the Republican nomination for joint representative now opens the way for the warring factions of Lake county to heal their difference, and quietly pull in the nomination. That is just what they will do is evident from an article copied elsewhere in this issue from the Crown Point Star.
Hon. J. Frank Hanley, of La- ■ fayette, lias been selected as ohairman of the Republican state convention at Indianapolis, next week. The honor could not have been more worthily bestowed. Nor could our state easily finely a man who would preside over the deliberation of the convention with more fairness and grace, nor one better adapted to sound the key note of the campaign in his opening speech. J. Stimpson, of Stoutsburg took the train here today for Chicago, where he will remain a few days. About 25 candidates for graduation from the county are taking the required examination here, today. Mrs. S, R. Nichols, of Barkley, is no longer able to recognize people, and can last but a few days longer. Rev. A. L. Ward is moving into Mrs. Isabell Parker’s house on West South street, just vacated by Rev. F. L Austin.
Mrs. Clara Kennedy, who has been quite sick at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Washburn, is improving. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Thomas returned to Monticello after a short visits with her parents, Mr. and Mrs- J. C. Gwin. Mrs. J. M. Wasson left this morning for two weeks’ visit with relatives at Geneva and Union City. - Mrs. G. W. Goff was called to Hebron this morning by the very serious sickness of her father Eli Sigler. Horace Bailey, of Hanging Grove Tp., has had a replapse, and will probably be compelled to resign his office of assessor. Mrs. James Randle who was over occo to attend the funeral of her daughter’s baby, returned holhe yesterday evening.
Harry Zimmerman, night operator at Fair Oaks, after ten days vacation spent here, returned to Fair Oaks yesterday evening. J. M. Gardner, lately manager of the Babcock mill is now managing a mill at Idaville. His family expect to remove tlipre, next Tuesday. H. L. The Council is requested to replace the dead tree-, to establish a small fountain, keep the grass mowed etc.
J. F. Warren and Mrs. R. W. Spriggs are taking the annual school enumeration, this year. So far ns it has been done, there will be about the same number of children of school age as last year. The enumeration will be finished some time next week.
Dr. S. Beck, the presiding elder of the Valparaiso district, will preach at the Trinity M. E. church, this Saturday evening,, and hold quarterly conference at the close of .the services. He will also preach Sunday morning and administer the “Lord’s Supper.”
Mrs. J. P. Hammond was taken much worse, last night, and it is thought that the turning point in her sickness, for better or worse, will be passed today. Mr. Hammond was summoned from Wheatfield, and arrived on the 11 a. m. train. Her condition, as we go to press is considered very critical. Delphi Journal: —The people of Porto Rico will pay a slight tax toward the maintenance of their government, but inasmuch as, they do not pay any taxes on their lands or buildings, no property taxes of any kind, they are still the lightest taxpayers of any country en earth, in spite of all the hysterical ravings that have gone out from theorists and impractical statesmen and mugwumps in this country. The question of whether the open air free band concerts which have proved such a popular feature and strong drawing card for several years past, shall be continued this year, is now up to our business men. The expectation is to give them on Thursday nights, this season, and to begin early in May. The subscription paper will be taken around early next week, and we have no doubt will meet a ready and generous reception, as is right and proper that it should.

Parkison is moving into his father, R. A. Parkison’s house just vacated by Rev. C. D. Jeffries. Miss Blanch Kenton finished her school in Jordan tp. Friday, and is now at home in Rensselaer.

Mrs. Matie Hopkins returned home Saturday evening from three weeks treatment at the Indiana Mineral Springs. Her treatment has benefitted her greatly. Mrs Walter V. Porter, who went to Colorado recently for the benefit of her daughter’s health, is now located at Colorado Springs and will remain for several months. Mrs. Clara Kennedy and Mrs. N. E. Ford went to Chicago today after two weeks’ visit with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Washburn. The former has just recovered from a severe attack of the grip. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carey returned to Ft. Wayne this morning after several days’ visit with her brother-in-law John C. Chilcote and family. It was her first visit to Rensselaer in 30 years. Jesse E. Wilson spent Sunday in Chicago. Mrs. Maloney and daughter, Miss Eugenia of Chicago, returned home Saturday evening after several days’ visit with Miss Maggie Healy. County, Treasurer R. A. Parkison bought Wallace Robinson’s residence, on Weston street, some time ago, and will occupy it as his family residence as soon as Mr. Robinson takes his family to Colorado. Valparaiso, which has just had an attack of “Saplio” is to catch it . again from another company. This manager informs the people that the first company gave only a garbled and abridged rendering of the play, but his company will give the real hot stuff. Bro. Zimmerman, of the Valparaiso Messenger, is surely the “Dean” of the newspaper corps of northwest Indiana. The weekly Messenger was 29 years old, last Thursday, and all that time under one management.
