The Library’s New Picture.
The reading room of the Jasper public library, in the court house, is now decorated by a very handsome oil painting, by Miss Flora Harris, who has presented it to the library. It represents several very old books, on a table, and beside them is burning a tallow candle in an old time brass candle stick. The picture is so well executed and true to facts that one feels that they might step up and turn the leaves of the books or blow out or “snuff” the somewhat smoky candle, One of the books represented in the picture is Benjamin Harris, the artist’s father’s, first bible. It is so well worn as to suggest that its owner’s is a frequent reader of the sacred volume. The candlestick shown in the picture, now the property of of Miss Stella Parkison, is over 100 years old. The picture is in an elegant gilt frame, the gift of J. W. Williams. -
