Not Ready to Chime In.
The Republican is not yet die posed to join in the chorus of the postmaster editors of this district ife their laudation of Congressman (Jrumpacker on his stand against t|ie President and the Republican Congress on the Porto Rico bill. “It is not the first time” says one of the postmaster lick-spittles, “that Mr. Crumpacker has had the independence to stand up against his part3’." And that is very true. He stood up against the annexation of Hawaii, but after it was Spcompliahed, in spite of his opposition, and he saw how completely the results of annexation proved false his predictions of evil, he pretty nearly tumbled over himself in his haste to declare himself a good annexationist. He raised tbeself-same wail of ‘‘imperalism,” “the entering wedge towards imperialism.” over the annexation of Hawaii, as he does now over the Porto Rico bill- Another case, and the only other one of importance, where his wonderful independence asserted itself, was in the matter of the exclusion of Polygamist Roberts. He spoke and worked against the overwhelming majority of his party then, as also against the overwhelming moral sense of the country.
No, we are not consumed with hysterical admiration for Mr. Crumpacker’s course on the Porto Rico bill. It is 3 statesmanlike measure which would have conferred immediate relief upon the suffering Porto Ricans, to whom, according to every statement come from there, it is eminently satisfactory; and whose constant and only appeal is for a settlement of the matter. And which settlement the course of Crumpacker and men who stand with him has aloue delayed. And that delay has most assuredly already caused the Porto Ricans more suffering in the past few weeks, than the House bill which he opposed, could have hurt them in the two years it had to run. Though as a matter of fact the bill would not hurt them at all; and neither Mr. Crumpacker nor the the whole great list of hysterical newspapers, are able to adduce any facts showing wherein it wonld work them injury. The tariff it levies is too small to be any barrier to trade between the mland and ihis country, but is large enough to yeild a small revenue for the immediate needs of the island. And which revenue will be paid partly by shippers from this country, and very large ]y, at least the first year, by American and Porto Rican capitalists, who have already bought up all the surplus coffee, sugar and tobacco on the island, expecting to make an immense profit when the McKinley tariff was removed. These speculators are the only p ople whom the proposed 15 per > it., tariff will hurt any, and they o doubt responsible for a . < 1 deal of the howling against t . - bill.
