A Profitable Hired Man.

Jasper Connty has a whole 10l of good, faithful and efficient pub lie officers, but the only one out o whom the county makes a rdal big direct profit, is R. B. Porter, the county recorder. Just how profitable an invest meat he is for Jasper county, » few figures will show. During th--12 months beginning March Is' 1899 and ending Feb., 28th, 1900, he recorded all told, 3,342 instruments. On these he collected recording fees to the total amouu'< of $2,849.70. This entire amoun be turned into the county treasury as the law requires, and received back in salary just $l,lOO. Thus the county’s clear profit but of the office for the year was $1749 70. We doubt if there be another county officer in the state whose salary is as small in proportion t< the fees he earns as our county recorder. In fact the salary allowed our recorder is altogether to< small for the work he has to do. He has to be on the jump all the time to keep up the work, and near, lyJail the time has to have the assistance of a deputy, whose pay has to come out of his own slim salary.
