At the city council Monday night, the consideration of the Halleck Telephone ordinance occupied the greater part of the session. The ordinance as revised by the city attorney differs in in some respects from the original > • o ordinance, mainly however, in the way of stricter provision regarding the setting of the poles, their height, material , etc. It is also provided that an exchange must be installed before Jan. Ist, 1901, or thej franchise be forfeited. The ohanges do npA materially affect the ordinance, and as changed it is satisfactory to Halleck Bros. Councilman Eger moved that the rules be suspended, and the ordinance passed, as amended; but there was no second to his motion. Councilman Murray then moved that it be referred to the committee or ordinances; but there was no Becond to ’ that motion, either. On motion of Mr. Eger the ordinauee was then passed to the second reading. Fire Chief Hopkins filed a re-, port showing that there were only 10 members in Hose Co. No. 1, and 7 in No. 2, whereas there should be 12 in both. He says it is difficult to get enough married men between 21 and 45 to keep the membership full, and recommends that the ages of eligibility be between 18 and 45; and that unmarried men be made eligible. He also wants various supplies for the company, such as hose supporters, hydrant gates, hose leak stops etc He also urges the adoption of some fire alarm system which will locate the part of town where the fire is. His report was referred to the fire committee. Some 22 claims were considered and Lillowed.
