FRIDAY. Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Sayler went to Gilman, 111., today to visit their son. Harry Kurrie went to Paoli, Ind., today to spend Christmas at home. James Handle, Jr., arrived home today, from a protracted stay in Illinois. Byron Sayler has sold his grocery stock, on Main street, to Chas. Nichols. The D. A. R. will meet Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, with Mrs. Alfred MoCoy. Miss Nina Noakes and August Walter, of Chioago, are the guests of Mrs. T. J. Joyner. Mrs. Chas. Roberts went to Montioello, today, to visit her mother Mrs. H. O. Harris. The Fortnightly Fiction club met last evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Nowels. Miss Lena Washburn and Sadie Leopold, of the State University, are home for the holidays. ♦ Uncle Henry Bruoe is now quite weak, and his friends are concerned about his condition. Mrs. Mariah Hopkins went to Remington today, to spend Christmas with her daughter Mrs. Frank Hardy. Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Newell of Peru, Ind. are the guests of his brother Smith Newell, near the depot. Miss Gail Wasson, of Northwestern University, arrived home today, to spend the holidays with her parents. Lon Watson, who has been over near Brook the past year, has moved back into Jasper, and on one of the Gifford farms, in Gillam. Ira Washburn, of Rush Medical College arrived home today, to spend Christmas with his parents Dr. and Mrs. I. B. Washburn. Miss Stella Perkins entertained several of her friends last evening. The time was pleasantly spent playing crokinole, and other diversions. Bernice Warren arrived home last evening from DePauw University to spend Christmas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Warren.
‘Robert Randle returned last evening from an 8 weeks’ business trip through Wisconsin. He is representing the Engle Mans . Co., of Hoopeston, 111. * Senator L. P. Newby, of New Albany who is now a candidate for the nomination for Lient. Governo on the Republican ticket is the guest of Mayor T. J McCoy. James Castele, of Kankakee, 111., who has been here several days on business, returned home today. He expects to make arrangements to become a resident here soon. Mark Hamburger, of St. Joseph College went to Salava, Ohio, and Luke Rath, also of the college went to Columbus, Ohio today to spend their Christmas vaoation. Unole Jacob Troxell and wife, after many years’ residence in the northern part of the county, are now moving back to end their days in their old home town, Rensselaer. They own a good honse on Vine street, and are making that their residence. A wedding yesterday afternoon was performed by Squire Bum* ham, in his office. The groom was Samuel M. Mitchell, one of the well know Mitchell family, of Gillam, and the bride Mrs. Pbebe Keihlow, of Walker. Both have been married before. The groom is 58 and the bride 33. Capt. Dolbey, of the salvation army came back today, with his new bride, formerly Capt. Clark, and they will take part in the Army’s farewell meeting here, this evening. An interesting feature of tonight’s meeting will be taking in of Cadet Brooks as a full soldier. Some time during the first week in January about thirty prisoners now oonfined at Jeffersonville will be transferred to the prison at Miohigan City. The number includes those who are over 30 years of age and a number who are serving their second term. The publishers of the Indianapolis News have sent out circulars offering a prize of twenty-five dollars in oash or books to any eighth grade pupil in any school in the state who writes the best essay on the subjeot of Indiana. The enterprise has the endorsement of the State Superintendent, and competition will be open until Jan. 15th, 1901. Essays will be limited to 600 words.
Governor Mount has asked the attorney general to enjoin men from cutting timber on'the state land in Starke and Laporte counties. The land lies along the Kankakee and Yellow rivers and has been taken possession of by “squatters,” who have not only built their homes there but have erected a sawmill. J. F. Irwin returned from the Presbyterian hospital, Chicago, last night. He is much better for the present, but anticipates a recurrence of his trouble in the future. He did not undergo an operation as the ex-ray examination failed to show the presence of a calculus. Other tests by the physicians convinced them that both kidneys contained abscesses, but Mr. Irwin himself does not agree with this view.
SATURDAY. Mrs. Evertt Brown, went to Monon today, to visit relatives. Mrs. A 1 McClintic, of Montioello, is the gnest of Mrs. Walker. Mr. and Mn. R. M. Vanatta of Marion, are visiting the former’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Martindale, went to Lafayette to-day, to visit relatives. Mrs. W. F. Smith has gone to Chicago to spend Christmas with relatives. Three years ago today, the first number of the Evening Republican was issued. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Roth went to Lafayette today to spend Christmas with their parents. Mrs. Felix French and Mrs. Thomas Lamson have gone to Greenfield, to visit relatives.
Miss Lizzie Roberts went to Marion today to spend Christmas withjier sister. G. W. Terwileger went to Champaign, 111., to spend Christmas with relatives. Mrs. Geo. H. Landis and baby granddaughter are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Mel Abbott. ■a Mrs. Monroe Banes and children went to Monon to spend Christmas with her parents. Mrs. Ruth Groom went to Lafayette today to spend the holidays with Mrs. Job Sims. Edward Miller went to Eaton, Ohio, today to spend Christmas with relatives and friends. Miss Nellie Meiser went to Loiters, Ind., today to spend Christmae with her parents. Mrs. A- K. Sayler and son and daughter are visiting her mother, Mrs. Fulton, in Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Vann Leah went to Union City Ohio today to spend the holidays with her parents. Mrs. Elizabeth Wineland returned today to her home near Kniman from Manchester, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Grant, of Chesnut, 111., are visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Grant. Misses Marie and Freda Kohler, went to Chioago Heights today and will spend their holiday vacation visiting relatives there and in Chioago. Miss Mabel Brinleyleft today for an extended visit with friends and relatives at Peru and Logansport. M. L. Spitler, Jr., of Indiana University law school, and Ed. Mills, Albert Carter of Purdue, are home for holiday vacation. The Ladies Literary Club will receive their friends at the home of Mrs. C. C. Starr on Washington street Monday Jan. Ist, from 3 to 5. Mr. and Mrs. Austin Hopkins went to Sullivan, Ind., today, to spend Christmas with their daughter Mrs. Thompson. Owen Flynn, who formerly worked for W. H. Eger, arrived yesterday, and will resume his former position. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Borntrager and sister Edith have gone to Walkoneta, Ohio, to spend Christmas with.Mrsßomtrager’s parents. Mrs. E. R. Hagins, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. W. Powers and Fred Cissel went to Wolcott today to be present at a family reunion to be held at their sister’s Mrs • Jennie Graham’s. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Schmidt of Spokane, Wash., are guests at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Robinson, in the west part of town. Mrs. Schmidt was formerly Miss Emma Robinson.
Rev. F. L. Austin arrived home last night from a four weeks absenoe in Ohio, where he held meetings for two weeks at Kesler and two weeks at Piqua. . The salvation army people held their last meeting at the M. E. church, last evening, and today have gone to Monon, where they will hold meetings for a while. Their meetings here resulted in 18 conversions. 1 J. E. Sullenberger went to Union City, Ind., to spend the holidays. Mrs. Chas. Hemphill and Mrs. S. J. James Kenton of Watseka 111., arrived today, and is spending the holidays with relatives and friends. Will Paxton, of Hammond, is off oti his trip to Cuba. He started from New Orleans a few
days ago, after a business trip through the lumber regions of Arkansas.. His brother, J. W„ of onr oity, who had thought of going with him, concluded not to go. Miss Winiefred Braddock went to Chicogo yesterday to spend the Christmas holidays with friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Levi Groover of Liston, Ind., arrived here this morning, and are visiting her brother in the Gifford district Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thewlius, of Linton, Ind., are spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Jordon. Miss Nellie McCarthy arrived home yesterday from yesterday from the training hospital for nurses at Danville 111. Miss Lovisa Warren, a lady of quite advanced age, is quite low with the dropsy, at the home of her brother, Harrison A. Warren, in Newton tp. Miss Lelia Middleton, who is at the Ddaooness Home at Indianapolis came home yesterday to spend the Chrstmas vacation with her parents Rev. and Mrs H. M. Middleton. Edmund Wills, Lucine and Fred Wagner, of South Bend, Earl Keilman, Dyer, Matthew Zimmer, Monterey, Albion Kamm of Mishawaka, students of the St. Joseph College left today to spend the holiday vacation at their homes. A. G. Hardy, supt. of the county farm, and his two children Bessie and Bruce have gone to Ambia, Benton County, to spend Christmas with relatives. Mrs. Lorenia Sills, wife A. K Sills, a Montioello attorney well known in this county, died Friday morning, of consumption, after several months sickness. The Rensselaer fireman will give their tenth annual masquerade ball on Friday evening, Deo. 29th, at Warner’s hall. The price of dance tickets will be sl, spectator’s tickets, 25 oents. Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Platt desire us to extend their most sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors who assisted them during the sickness and death of their little daughter. J. H. Beacham. up near the railroad, is the first of the new crop of dog-tax delinquents, He was up at the captain’s office a day or two ago, and assessed about sls. There are said to be many others in town and vicinity whose dog taxes remain unpaid. We hope they will take the hint and pay up before proceedings are instituted against them. Elder and Mrs. J. C. Fisher, who have been holding successful meetings at Union sohooi house near Forseman went to Fair Oaks yesterday to conduct meetings. Joseph Braun, of Connorsville, Ind.; Albert McGill, of Toledo, Ohio; Rupert Golbel, of Biyan, Ohio; George Emsing, Pete Wahl; of Lafayette; Joe Trenton, George Studer, Howard Muliler, John Wessel, of Fort Wayne, all of St. Joseph College, have gone to their homes to spend Christmas vacation. Mrs. A W. Zilmer and children have gone to Clamo, Wis., to visit her parents. Mrs. Yens Anderson left today to join her husband at Hammond, where they will reside.
MONDAY. A little girl of A. N. Bailey is quite sick with long fever. George N. Dunn, of Wichita, Kans., is making a Christmas visit in Rensselaer S. C. Robinson the mail route agent is spending the holidays with his parents and friends. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Perkins have gone to Mishawaka today to spend the holidays with relatives. Mrs. Wm. Henson, southeast of town, has gone to Peotone, 111., to visit relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Grant, of South Bend, came Saturday even mg, for a Christmas visit with horns folks.
Prof. T. C. Kennedy, Principal of High School at Thorn town, Ind., is the gnest for a few days of Dr. I B. Washburn’s family and of his sister Mrs. Warren Washburn. The thermometer was 4 degrees above zero, 28 below the freezing point, this morning, and the searching north wind which accompanies the low temperature, makes deoidedly severe weather. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Washbnrn and sister Mary, all of Chioago, came down Saturday to spend Sunday and Christmas with their parents. Mrs. A. L. Ward and son left Saturday to visit her sister in Indianapolis. They will also visit her parents at Arcadia. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver D .ugherty, of Hammond, are spending the Christmas holidays with his grandfather, Uncle Isaao Sayler, and other relatives. Franklin V. Elijah, an early settler of'this region, living here long before Jasper and Newton counties were divided, died at or near Mt. Ayr, last Tuesday, Dec. 19th. He was a most estimable and kindly old gentleman, and will be held in kind remembrance by all onr older residents. He was nearly 80 years old. Prof. I. N. Warren arrived from LaPorte, Saturday for the holiday vacation. His family was already here. Frank and Mary Brusnahan, of northwest of town, are spending holidays with relatives at Monticello. Miss Mary Leatherman went to Indianapolis Saturday to visit her father and brother daring the holidays. The Jasper County Oil and Gas Company is an organization which evidently has its headquarters in South Bend, though its field of operations is in this oounty. The company has secured and recorded oil and gas leases covering a great deal of land in Gillsm, Walker, Wheatfield and Kankakee tps. Mrs. E. J. Duvall and children went to Chicago Saturday to spend the Christmas holidays with relatives. Dr. S. E. Sperling, Berl Richardson, Miss Bell Marshall and Ben Coen, of the Wisconsin University, arrived home Saturday to spend their Christmas vacation with there parents
