Death of General Packard.
General Jasper Packard died Wednesday, at the state soldiers’ home at Lafayette, and of which institution he was commandant. His death resulted from sickness which began on Thanksgiving day. At the time of his death he was proprietor of the New Albany daily and week Tribune. v He was formerly at Laporte, for many years, where he was engaged in the newspaper business. He represented his district in congress three terms, and when, as now, LaPdrte was in the same district as Jasper county. He. entered the army, in the civil war, as a private and ended as a brigadier general. He was a man of great ability and strength of character. His first enlistment, in. the fall of 1861, was in the 48th Indiana, which included so many Jasper county men.
