Work for the Railroad.
To the business men* of Rensselaer and farmers of Marion township: At the railroad meeting held in the court house on last Thursday evening. Mr. George H. Tenney of Kendallville Ind. was present and stated that he w T as the promoter of the Kendallville, Rochester and Western R. R. and that he desired to build the road through Rensselaer Ind. That in order to interest eastern capitalists and to secure the necessary amount of money for the construction of the road, it would be required of the citizens of this city to write letters to him at the above address stating the conditions and advantages of this county, and city, in order to prove to the minds of the capitalists that this part of the stat 6 was not a wilderness. This is all that is required of us at this time, That no subscription will betaken for preliminary surveys or any. thing of that sort. Now, fellow citizens, here is an opportunity of a life time for Rensselaer to get another railroad which all will admit is very much needed. It is true we a very good system now in operation through our city but when we compare freight rates in and out of our city with those of other towns near by, we will better know why we should work for another road. The gentleman has not asked of us something hard to do, but with a clear conscience, we can give our city and county a good name, our lands are rich, well drained in good state of cultivation, very productive all the cereal and a fine stock require. Our city is second to none in this part of the state. Fully alive to all the interest of the day. Weil loeated in a fertile district, while an immense business is being transacted here every year. Yet the business interest of our city and community demand and deserve better railroad facilities and we should have them. We are as it were shut out from all manufacturing interest and will forever be with an arbitrary rate. This we can’t afford to permit. It will be a great blessing to all. Remember that it will only cost you 3 cents to write a letter and it may do an incalculable good for our city and country. Write your letters this week and put Rensselaer in the front rank.
