Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 21, Number 20, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 1 December 1899 — Broker Hooley's Fad. [ARTICLE]
Broker Hooley's Fad.
Mr. Hooley, the English financier, who came to grief, does not regard him self as a superstitious person—far from it—but for all that he had a curious fad. He believed—perhaps he still be-lieves-Mn the luck-bringing properties of threepenny pieces with holes in them. He collected them and gave orders to his bankers to save them for him. He used to present “lucky” threepenny bits to his friends, for he always carried some loose in his pockets. Bracelets composed of three-pen-nies were given by him to feminine acquaintances, and it was plain to see that he regarded these damaged little coins as talismans.
