Bad Blow for the British.
Unole Johnny Ball has been up against it pretty bad this week, in South Africa. The Boers in over-whelming numbers have the British army practically surrounded at Ladysmith, and general White sent out parts of two regiments and a battery, to occupy an outlying hill Their mules stampeded and ran away with all their extra ammunition, and the Boers surrounded them, and although they fought until all their ammunition was gone, they were forced to surrender. The latest estimates place the number of British lost andsnrrendered at that time, at 1,000. The loss is « severe one on account of the smallness of the British forces now at the front. Of course it can not effeot the nltimate result, bat it will no doabt much prolong the war.
