Finding everything so prosperous and thriving in the United States with every line of industry pushing forward, employed and employing to its full capacity, it is not unnatural that the Democratic party—the party of natural opposition—should go outside of th* country in its criticism, and see in the Philippine policy vast harm to come to the United States in future years. There is Democrate to kick about in the present conditions; so they are driven to “seeing things” for the future.
A strong Democratic contemporary states its opinion that if Bryan does not lot up on his anti-imper-ialistic mouthinks he will endanger the southern vote. Not one but jnany prominent southern statesmen have declared stiffly for expansion, including Senator Morgan General Wheeler,* Senator McLhhrin; and now Governor Hogg of Texas who has been a staunch supporter of Bryan says that it is the duty of the United States to “shoot hell” out of the treacherous Filipinos and bring the war to an end.
