Nations That Sympathize With Kruger.

All the nations of Europe seem to be in sympathy with the Boers in their war with Great Britain. • But Americans ought not to find in that circumstance a conclusive reason for placing their sympathies in the same direction. These same nations sympathized even more strongly with Spain during our recent war. Their jealousy of the growing power of the English speaking nations will cause them to sympathize with people at war with either England or the United States. Americans should , not either conclude at once that they must sympathize with the Boers as a people fighting for freedom and independence. The fact is that Germany, now far the most despotic government in Europe, except Russia, is the Boers’ most ardent sympathizer should warn us to be suspicious of that view. They should rememember that it was this same Germany alone that sympathized with, upheld and sustained the Turks in their wholesale and unspeakable atrocities against the Armenians in 1896; and this same Germany that sent its cannon and its officers to assist Turkey in its late war against Greece. Germany the virtual murderer of 100,000 Armenians; Russia, the wholesale banisherof the Jews; Spain, the oppressor of Cuba and the Phillipines; France of the Dreyfus persecution.! Those are the kind of nations which care nothing for the Boers’ inhuman treatment of the native Africans in past generations and their unbearable oppression of their white foreign population in this. It is anything to be against England with them. Americans should have some better reason for bestowing their sympathies Especially as Great Britain was in our little war with Spain, as she is now in our war in the Phillipines.
