Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 91, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 21 July 1899 — From Mrs. Gen. H. W. Lawton. [ARTICLE]
From Mrs. Gen. H. W. Lawton.
Gen. H. W. Lawton, now in the Philippines, is a member of Harmony lodge, I. O. O. F., in Fort Wayne. He recently sent his dues, and as the lodge had forwarded him a very kind letter with his receipt, Mrs. Lawton took the responsibility of answering it, as she said the general was very busy every moment on the field. Among other things Mrs. Lawton writes: “This is a very picturesque and rather pleasant place and full of possibilities and interest. The people are small, quiet and lazy, the houses quaint, airy and not at all uncomfortable. We are making the best of things, and are quite satisfied with our life here; but when the order comes for home, it will not take us long to pack up and be ready, and with our faces turned toward ‘God’s country,’ bid good bye very cheerfully to the Philippines.”
