| North barkley. Miss Mae Callahan returned home % Sunday. Comer is booming, six families living there. George Levereau is visiting in Kankakee, 111., this week. Harry Gifford and wife did shopping in Rensselaer Tuesday. We have at last, a store ai Gifford. One being opened last week. George Meckling made his usual call at Aaron Seitz’s Sunday night. •Joseph Myers, of Hoopston, 111., is at home now helping with the farm.
T. M. Callahan and John Holliday visited friends in Rensselaer Saturday and Sunday. Tom Kight, had some pretty late callers, a few nights ago. He didn’t have any shoes to mend either. Will Bodell, who has been in this vicinity for the past 6 months returned to his home at Harrod, Ohio, Saturday. i Greenly Cook, Mahlon Layton and Willis McMurray are prospecting in North Dakota, with a view o: ! locating there permantly, C. H. Bateman, of Lafayette, Ohio, and Miss Maggie Funk, of Rensselaer, spent Saturday and Sunday with the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Funk. Miss Zelma Funk and Belle Seitz were in Rensselaer Saturday taking in the sights and doing shopping for themselves and “Others.” “Others” meaning one of those bachelors at Comer.

Joe Kight visited his mother at Pine Village over Sunday. T. J. Mallett spent several days in Chichago Heights last week. C. C. Kent shipped a car load of hogs to Chicago Monday night. Harvey Querry and family visited relatives at Kniman over Sunday. Sam Thornton had the misfortune to lose a valuable horse last week. Ed. Kessler did business in Chicago Heights several days this week. John Kight, of Chicago spent Sunday with his parents and friends. Jim Cox and children have moved I here from Chicago Heights permanently. Sam Curtis, of Barnesville, Ohio, is visiting Thomas Fry and family this week. * Quite a number of our boys attended the ball game at Rensselaer last Friday. The Holyites held services at the school house last Sunday, morning and evening. Mrs. Tom Mallett visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wiseman, at Virgie last week. Road working, order of the day. * Mrs. Nathan Eldridge is on the sick list. Mr. Rusk is putting a new addition to their house. Steve Freeman and family visited at John Norman’s Sunday. Miss Ola Lang, of Surrey, is the the guest of Miss Ora Henkle. Chas. Hinkle of Valparaiso visited at J. C. Hinkle’s Monday and Tuesday last. Mrs. Jane Shaw, of Rensselaer is the guest of her sister, Mrs. W. Murray. We wish South Barkley would do as North Barkley and get some gravel roads. J. N. Sample was thrown from a horse Saturday morning and quite badly shaken up. Quite a number of our young people attended children’s day at Independance in Gillam Sunday. Mrs. S. R. Nichols is home from Danville where she has been taking treatment for a cancer. Her health is much improved. The ice cream social given by members of the Barkley M. E. church at O. Moore’s last Saturday evening was well attended. Pro. oeeds amounted to $14.75 after expenses were paid. UNION.
Wheat is very scarce. Oats will soon be ready to cut. The binders are tieing up the rye. The apple crop will be very great. There is quite a rush of corn to Parr this week. The Judy elevator will change hands next week. Charles Pullins, of Surrey buys most of our fat hogs and cows. Crops looking very good except where blown down by the storm. Cecil Alter has gone to Chicago Heights to serve as assistant engineer. The fourth quarterly conference of the M. P. church will convene at the Rose Bud church on the fourth Saturday and Sunday in July. A severe wind and rain storm passed through this section last night destroying great numbers of fruit trees, demolishing fences and sweeping the corn to the ground in many places.
